Pet Identification

Proper pet identification could mean the difference between life and . . .

FOR YOUR PET'S SAKE, IDENTIFY THEM PROPERLY.

Thousands of dogs and cats enter shelters throughout Canada each year as strays. They have no identification. They could easily be returned if they did! Be sure your dog or cat has on an up-to-date identification tag at all times. Include the pet's name and the telephone number where someone can be reached. Do it today!

Identification tags are inexpensive and are available through our shelter. We offer high quality polished stainless steel tags for a very small price. Visit today and see our display of samples to choose from. Your tags will be shipped directly to your address.

Remember, if your pet has a collar and identification, strangers will be more likely to step in and aid your lost animal. Cats too! Purchase a special "break-away" collar with built in elastic for cats. Should your cat become caught by the collar (for example) the collar will pull off and prevent choking.

As well as collar and tags, consider having your pet microchiped. This can be done at the same time your pet is spayed or neutered. The veterinarian clinics in our area now provide chips that are easily implanted under your pets skin between their shoulder blades. The chips are then registered and your lost pet will be readily identified once scanned.

Tragically, fewer than 40% of dogs, and 5% of cats are ever reunited with their owners. These percentages would increase dramatically if more pets were identified properly. Even the most responsible pet owners experience unexpected circumstances that cause pets to stray or become lost.

Remember that our three municipal units require that all dogs be licensed, by law. Municipal tags are available either at your municipal office or at the Yarmouth SPCA shelter.
